How to Judge a Diamond – 4Cs, Certification & Real vs Fake

Diamonds are forever — but only if you know what you're buying. Whether you're gifting a diamond pendant to someone special or treating yourself to a timeless piece, understanding what makes a diamond truly valuable is the first step to making a confident, informed choice.

At Savya Jewels, we believe every customer deserves to shop with clarity and confidence. That's why we've put together this simple, easy-to-understand guide — just for you.

✦ The 4Cs of a Diamond — Your Complete Guide

Every diamond in the world is graded on four key qualities, known as the 4Cs. These four factors together determine a diamond's beauty, rarity, and price.

1. Carat — The Weight

Carat is simply the unit used to measure a diamond's weight. 1 Carat = 0.2 grams. The higher the carat, the rarer and more valuable the diamond. However, a bigger carat doesn't automatically mean a more beautiful diamond — the other three Cs play an equally important role.

"A 1-carat diamond with an Excellent cut will always outshine a 2-carat diamond with a Poor cut."

2. Clarity — The Purity

Clarity refers to how free a diamond is from internal flaws (inclusions) and surface marks (blemishes). Here's a quick breakdown of clarity grades:

Grade Meaning
FL / IF Flawless / Internally Flawless — the finest
VVS1 / VVS2 Very Very Slightly Included — near perfect
VS1 / VS2 Very Slightly Included — excellent value
SI1 / SI2 Slightly Included — flaws invisible to naked eye
I1 / I2 / I3 Included — flaws visible to naked eye

Smart Tip: For everyday jewellery, VS2 or SI1 offers the best balance of beauty and value.

3. Color — The Shade

Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). The closer to D, the more valuable the diamond. For jewellery, grades D–F (colorless) and G–J (near-colorless) are the most popular choices — they look stunning and offer great value.

4. Cut — The Sparkle

Cut is arguably the most important of the 4Cs. It determines how brilliantly a diamond reflects light. A perfectly cut diamond will dazzle even in dim lighting. Cut grades range from Excellent to Very Good to Good to Fair to Poor. Always choose Excellent or Very Good cut for maximum brilliance and fire.

✦ Why Certification Matters — Always Buy a Certified Diamond

A diamond certificate is your assurance that the diamond has been independently graded by experts. It tells you exactly what you're getting — no guesswork, no surprises. Think of it as the diamond's identity card.

The Three Most Trusted Certification Labs

GIA — Gemological Institute of America
The world's most trusted and globally recognised diamond grading lab. A GIA certificate is accepted and respected worldwide.

IGI — International Gemological Institute
The most popular certification in India. Trusted for both natural and lab-grown diamonds. Widely accepted by Indian jewellers and buyers.

AGS — American Gem Society
Especially renowned for its precise and detailed Cut grading system.

"At Savya Jewels, every diamond we offer comes with a certificate — because your trust is our most precious gem."

✦ Real vs Fake Diamond — Simple Tests You Can Do at Home

The market is full of imitations. While a certified gemologist is always the best judge, here are four easy home tests that can give you a quick first impression:

1. The Water Test

Drop the diamond into a glass of water. A real diamond is very dense and will sink straight to the bottom. A fake stone or glass will float or sink slowly.

2. The Fog Test

Breathe on the diamond like you would on a mirror. A real diamond clears up instantly because it disperses heat rapidly. A fake stone will stay foggy for 2–4 seconds.

3. The Newspaper Test

Place the diamond flat-side down on a newspaper. If you can read the text through it, it's likely not a real diamond. A real diamond scatters light so strongly that you cannot read through it.

4. The UV Light Test

Hold the diamond under a UV light. Most real diamonds emit a blue glow (fluorescence). This isn't 100% definitive, but it's a helpful additional clue.

Please Note: These home tests are a helpful starting point, but they are not conclusive. For absolute certainty, always rely on a GIA or IGI certificate or consult a certified gemologist.
